12 Muslims quizzed by Jais, given counselling

An unidentified woman, who turned up for an interview with Selangor Religious Department officials yesterday together with 11 others, before they were provided counselling by the Selangor Mufti Department.
SHAH ALAM: The 12 Muslims involved in the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) saga early this month were yesterday questioned and given counselling at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

A source said the 12 were interviewed by Jais enforcement officers at 9.15am, before they were offered counselling by the Selangor Mufti Department.

As of late afternoon, counselling for some of those involved were still continuing.

It is learnt that Jais director Marzuki Husin and Deputy Selangor Mufti Datuk Abdul Majid Omar were among those present during the meeting.

Also present was a lawyer representing 10 of the 12.

Attempts to get comments from Marzuki on the case were unsuccessful as members of the media, who were waiting outside his office, were turned away by security personnel.

In a brief text message sent by the department's public relations deputy director Nurhamizah Othman, it was reiterated that Jais would only issue a statement once a full report was ready. It was not specified when it would be completed.

On Aug 3, a team of enforcement officers from Jais, assisted by policemen, inspected the DUMC following a tip-off that Muslims were present at a dinner event there.

DUMC said later the dinner had nothing religious in nature but was to celebrate the work of non-profit organisation Harapan Komuniti in helping women, children, HIV/AIDS sufferers and victims of natural disasters.

Following public outcry, Jais was asked to prepare a full report, detailing what actually transpired on that day, to be submitted to Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who would then seek the advice of the Sultan of Selangor.

PR Becomes Citizen In Four Hours

Less than four hours after Malaysiakini reported that a permanent resident (PR) holding a red MyPR card had been registered as a new voter, she has apparently become a citizen.

She now has a blue Mykad, based on a check of the same online system of the National Registration Department (NRD) where her identification details are recorded.

A check of the NRD online verification system twice at 5.48pm yesterday and 11.30am today had shown that a person named Mismah was a PR holder who had collected her MyPR card (No. 640704715238), an identification card for PR.

When the same number was entered into the Election Commission (EC) online verification system, Mismah appeared as a newly-registered voter.

However, another check with the NRD system at 3pm returned a shocking result. The same Mismah has become a citizen who has collected her blue Mykad.

Her status on the EC online verification system remained the same as at 3pm. A newly-registered voter in the latest supplementary electoral roll draft which is now on display for public scrutiny.

Despite the fact that non-citizens cannot be registered as voters, she was registered in the Ijok state constituency and Kuala Selangor parliamentary constituency, which are respectively held by Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid from PKR and Dzulkelfy Ahmad from PAS.

It appeared that Mismah's is not an isolated case.

Federal Territory PAS has claimed to have encountered 52 such cases when filing complaints with the Federal Territory EC today about the supplementary electoral roll draft.

Titiwangsa PAS division secretary Hedzer Ibrahim, who went to the EC office with other party leaders, said the first check with the NRD online verification system from 9-10am today showed that the 52 were PR who had collected their red MyPR card.

However, when the PAS team conveyed the result to the Federal Territory EC officials about 3pm, the latter checked the NRD database and found the 52 names to be those of citizens.

Hedzer then instructed the party technician to check the NRD online system again and obtained the same surprising result.

Fortunately PAS had screen-captured the result accessed this morning and a copy was given to Malaysiakini.

The 52 voters are registered in six parliamentary constituencies in Kuala Lumpur that were won by the opposition in the last general election.

These are Lembah Pantai (6 voters), Bandar Tun Razak (1), Segambut (5), Titiwangsa (28), Batu (8) and Wangsa Maju (4).

Malaysiakini is attempting to seek comment from the NRD.

Voter Registration Procedures

According to election laws, the EC updates the electoral roll every three months with a quarterly supplementary electoral roll draft.

The names of all newly-registered voters, voters who have changed their residing addresses and voters who have been removed from the electoral roll are compiled in the supplementary electoral roll draft.

The roll is then displayed usually for one week for public scrutiny before it is gazetted and used in the next election.

During the display period, members of the public can raise their objection to the names listed in the supplementary electoral roll.

Global markets plunge on recession fears

NEW YORK: Stock markets worldwide plunged on Thursday amid fears of a new global economic downturn, with Wall Street suffering its worst day since the financial crisis.

Mounting worries over the eurozone debt crisis and a new batch of weak economic data from the United States did a one-two punch to hammer investor confidence, shaking investors on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 4.3 per cent, or 512.76 points -- its worst one-day drop since December 2008 -- to close at 11,383.68, erasing all of its gains so far this year.

The broader S&P 500 dropped 4.8 per cent to end the day at 1,200.07, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dived 5.1 per cent to 2,556.39.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index fell 3.43 per cent, retreating to levels last seen in September 2010; in Frankfurt the DAX fell 3.40 per cent, and France's CAC 40 dropped 3.90 per cent.

In Brazil, the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange lost 5.72 per cent, while Mexico's Bolsa lost 3.4 per cent.

"We're seeing the erosion and now the loss of confidence, confidence in the economy, confidence in the market, confidence in the policy makers. It's all showing up," said Hugh Johnson, of Hugh Johnson Advisors.

"There is a deep concern about global growth and of the state of play in the United States in particular," said City Index analyst Giles Watts.

"Traders are growing increasingly concerned about a sharp slowdown in US economic activity in the third quarter."

In Europe, investor sentiment remains plagued by worries that debt-laden Italy and Spain could be engulfed by the fast-moving eurozone debt crisis.

The European Central Bank announced Thursday that it would resume emergency credit-easing measures, some of which were last enacted at the height of the global financial crisis.

But the ECB's efforts still failed to restore confidence. The risk premium investors demand to buy Spanish 10-year bonds over safe-bet German debt shot back up to near a record high on Thursday.

The eurozone debt crisis has put Italy and Spain under huge pressure in recent weeks after Greece, Ireland and Portugal had to be bailed out by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

In the United States, data continued to point to a very weak economy, with some analysts citing fears of a new recession.

The US Labor Department reported Thursday that weekly claims for unemployment benefits remained at a high 400,000 last week.

"Stocks have retreated deeper into the red to set a new 2011 low. The bleeding continues to be broad-based," said Briefing.com.

"European banking stocks are under pressure as contagion fears work their way into Italy, the third largest economy in the eurozone."

Gold scored a new record at $1,681.72 per ounce on the spot market in New York as investors flocked to the precious metal, regarded as a safe bet in times of economic turmoil. It later retreated to $1,647.57.

Prices for US government bonds, another safe haven, also rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 2.46 per cent from 2.60 per cent late Wednesday, while that on the 30-year bond fell to 3.72 per cent from 3.87 per cent. (Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.)

Oil prices in New York and London both fell more than five per cent amid fears that a slowdown could take a deep bite out of global energy demand.

"The fear of a double dip recession with the slowdown in the US and the sovereign debt situation in Europe is having everybody biting their nails," said Adam Sieminski, chief energy economist of Deutsche Bank.

On forex markets, the dollar surged against other major currencies, helped by Japanese and Swiss government interventions to press their own currencies back down after the recent jump in risk-aversion.

But by the end of the day, the Swiss franc -- the favorite safe-haven of recent months -- ended higher against the greenback: at 2100 GMT, one dollar bought 0.7666 francs, compared to 0.7692 late Wednesday.

The euro fell more than two per cent to 1.0818 francs from 1.1019.

But the dollar was up against the euro, which brought $1.4106 (from $1.4318) and the yen, 78.93 yen (from 76.97).

The pound also lost ground to the greenback, to $1.6266 (from $1.6422).

Madrid 'indignant' protesters clash with riot police

At least 20 people have been injured - including seven police officers - in clashes between riot police and protesters in Madrid.

Police had stopped the demonstrators, known as "the indignants", from entering a square which has become a focus of anti-government protests.

Witnesses said police charged into a crowd outside the interior ministry.

Correspondents say it was the most serious incident since the protest movement began in mid-May.

The indignants are complaining about the government's handling of the economy and high unemployment.

More than 200 police had been deployed on Thursday to close the Puerta del Sol square for the third day running.

In the evening, hundreds of demonstrators marched across the city to protest against the closure.

Monitored by police helicopters, they held a rally at the Plaza de Cibeles and many then gathered outside the interior ministry on the Paseo de la Castellana.

Witnesses said several police vans arrived and riot police charged into the crowd.

A spokesman for the emergency services told AFP news agency that 20 people were slightly injured, including seven policemen.

Four people were taken to hospital for observation, he said.

The protests in Madrid began on 15 May and spread to other Spanish cities via Facebook and Twitter.

Spain's unemployment rate is the highest in the EU, at 21.3%, and is particularly high among the under-25s, at 44.6%.

Grease actress Annette Charles dies at 63

Actress Annette Charles, who played Cha Cha DiGregorio, in the hit film Grease, has died at the age of 63.

The actress, who also starred in TV series Gunsmoke and The Bionic Woman, was suffering from cancer.

As Cha Cha, she memorably stole the limelight dancing the hand jive with Danny (John Travolta) at the school dance competition.

She continued acting into the late eighties, but latterly moved into teaching near her home in California.

According to reports, she had only recently been diagnosed with cancer - and died from complications linked to the disease.

A family member told US website TMZ: "Annette had recently started having difficulty breathing and when she went to the doctor she learned that she had a cancerous tumour in one of her lungs."

She died in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Her death comes two months after Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie in the hit 1978 musical, passed away.

She officially took charge of the Congress party in 1998 and was elected to parliament in elections in 1999.

Under her leadership, the party turned in its worst performance since independence in the 1999 general elections. Congress also performed indifferently in state elections in 2003.

But the Gandhi name is still revered in India and Congress looked to Mrs Gandhi to translate that feeling into votes.

In 2004, her political opponents attempted to rake up her Italian descent as an election issue, saying the choice for voters was between an Indian or foreign leader.

But their appeal to xenophobia apparently fell on deaf ears.

Long before the election she surrendered her Italian passport in favour of full Indian citizenship.

Sonia herself said in a television interview: "I never felt they look at me as a foreigner. Because I'm not. I am Indian."
More combative
Her campaign was boosted by the entry of her son, Rahul, as a candidate. Her daughter Priyanka has also campaigned energetically for her.

Though she turned down the post of prime minister, Sonia is seen to have shed her formerly taciturn manner, routinely working the crowds at political meetings and displaying a more combative approach.

"We have the power and we could teach those anti-social forces a lesson," she told one meeting, alluding to the perpetrators of the deadly Mumbai attacks of November 2008.

"Our patience should not be treated as our weakness... We will not tolerate any act against India."

Sonia Maino was born on 9 December 1946 in the town of Orbassano, near Turin, to a building contractor and his wife.

She was raised in a traditional Roman Catholic household. Her mother and two sisters still live in Orbassano.

In 1964 she went to Cambridge to study English at a language school.

Her life changed forever when she met her future husband, Rajiv Gandhi, who was studying engineering at the university.

The couple married in 1968 and she moved into the house of her mother-in-law and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

She initially disliked Indian food and clothes and caused controversy when she was photographed wearing a mini skirt.

But she spent the 1970s becoming steeped in Indian culture. Although she has learned Hindi, she is not a fluent speaker of the language.

She no doubt also watched and learned as Indira fought a variety of political battles.
Series of tragedies

In 1984 Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for her decision to send troops into their holiest shrine, the Golden Temple.Sonia was propelled into the forefront of the Indian political scene as Rajiv, whose brother Sanjay died in a plane crash in 1980, was picked as the successor to the Gandhi-Nehru crown.

Rajiv became prime minister but seven years later tragedy struck the Gandhi family again.

Sonia's husband was killed by a Tamil suicide bomber during a visit to Madras (Chennai) in 1991.

She and her children, Rahul and Priyanka, were consumed with grief.

Sonia resisted Congress attempts to persuade her to step into Rajiv's shoes and eschewed politics for several years.

Eventually, in 1998, she agreed to become more involved but her initial efforts were overshadowed by Congress's humiliating defeat by the BJP in the 1999 election.

In August 2000 she became a grandmother when Priyanka gave birth to a son.

Earlier that year Sonia had asked a court to grant clemency to a woman who had played a part in the bomb attack that killed her husband.

The bomber, Nalini, had appealed for mercy on the grounds that her seven-year-old daughter would be orphaned if she was hanged.

The court later commuted Nalini's death sentence.

Sonia is a familiar figure in Amethi, her husband's rural parliamentary constituency in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh which her son Rahul now represents.

She herself has represented the neighbouring seat of Rai Bareilly.

She suffered a minor setback in 2006 when she had to surrender her membership of parliament, following allegations that she was violating rules by profiting from a second public post.

She won a by-election later in the year to return to parliament.

But her ascendancy over her party since it won power proves how much Congress still depends on the Gandhi dynasty.

Man Utd defender Phil Jones included in England squad

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been included in England's provisional 30-man squad for the friendly with Holland next Wednesday.

Jones, 19, moved from Blackburn to United for £17m in June, having played only one season in the Premier League.

There is still no place in the squad for former captain David Beckham, despite his impressive recent performances for LA Galaxy.

Manager Fabio Capello is due to reduce the squad to 23 players this weekend.

The provisional squad is not formally announced. The Football Association simply call all the players included, and their clubs, to ensure they are available for England duty.

Capello has decided that now is not the right time for major changes to the squad, as the domestic season has not even started.

However, he was highly impressed by Jones' performances for at the recent Under-21 European Championships and has decided he merited inclusion in the provisional squad for the seniors.

Capello and England's general manager Franco Baldini have been busy watching England hopefuls in action during pre-season.

Capello will watch striker Andy Carroll in action for Liverpool against Valencia on Saturday, while Baldini will attend the Everton v Villarreal game at Goodison Park.

England play European Championship qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales next month.

Mr. Right is a key subject for many women and an inspiration of hope on a daily basis. Yes, probably exists Yes, he is probably your match. Yes, you WILL find him! Of course in all our lives we have goals, aims, ambitions and desires small and large. It is these landmarks and goalposts that keep us positive and busy. It is what makes us human. In recent years the terms Mr. Right and Miss Right have become over used and clichéd. It is almost as if we have a chart on our wall, an extensive check list or a resume of specifics that the person in question must submit to get his foot through the door of the "potentials" interview.

Most of us would deny we are pushing away Mr. Right as we hope that chance will take a hand in bringing Mr. Right to us. Many of us accept that we have a small but insignificant "list" and yes, we accept that there are some requirements on it which are nonnegotiable, but they are fairly minor. Or are they? The fact of the matter is that as the decades have passed by, we have become far more sophisticated, as humans, as individuals, as lovers and mates. We are adults, we have a good salary and a nice home and are well educated in the ways of the world. Therefore it is only fair that we seek someone to match, to fit in, to adapt, to accompany, to facilitate, right? Therein lays the issue.

The fact is that Mr. Right also has a check list, of his wishes and needs, only a small one of course, but a list all the same, and he is ticking off your assets as we speak. He wants someone young, someone well educated, someone good looking and in shape. We are indignant, how shallow we cry. Typical man we sigh. Yet are we any better? Look at your list and look very carefully at what or who constitutes your Mr. Right. And then look again. Are you sure first of all that your tick list is achievable? Yes, or are you willing to negotiate? Okay so you are happy with your list. Then what?

Are you willing to go out and get your Mr. Right or are you waiting for him to come to you? Many women tell me they are waiting for Mr. Right. The word "waiting" concerns me. By waiting it means men come to you by chance, perhaps by design and you tick off their assets, your check them out and then cast off anyone who doesn't match your list. Maybe you do, but remember this my friends, Mr. Right is looking for his Miss Right? How much work have you put into being Miss Right or should he accept you as you are and fit in around you? No what they are asking is where all the women went who don't have a huge checklist as long as their arms. Most men simply want someone to love, someone who they can dote on in their own ways and who they can feel special and share with. The problem for them is that they are not finding it because they are constantly under the pressure of women’s check lists. They are told they must adapt and fit in, they are trying to fulfill their part of the list bargain and then they are faced with the Miss Rights out there.

Do you know, as a single guy I have been asked many times recently by girls if I can explain basic male behavior in terms that we can all understand. Laborious chats over much wine have led to my lady friends confessing that all is not well in the world of reading what men are thinking. So the Singles Files decided to take a look. It appears that even in our advanced culture, the sexes still present the simplest misunderstandings. Men constantly appear to be a mystery when dating, and even as a man, I agree that we can be as frustrating and perplexing to the uninitiated. So it's back to basics for us today.

Millions of years of evolution haven't clouded human nature and even the most skillful women dater will have encountered male antics that defy belief. 'He acts like a Neanderthal' she may say. And do you, know, she isn't far wrong. Why? Simple, man is a hunter; that is what he was designed to do: Hunt. Which essentially means that in the world of dating the man wants to hunt you, even if you are the easiest catch on earth. Women forget this fact and ignore it at their peril. To get the man you want, you have to make them chase you and feel like they have achieved something when they eventually get to put their arm round your waist and give you a perfect kiss. If that sense of achievement is missing, your hunter will go on searching.

Okay so let's move on to the Savannah plain to explain further. How do we know what men want and like. Well all hunters want to catch the lioness, she with the thick mane and feline grace, queen of the jungle. Men will convince themselves that they could catch the lioness if they so wanted because they all like to think they are king of the jungle. But today they are too tired to do anything about it. That is exactly what happens when your hunters gather in bars together. They discuss the ones that got away and their prowess out in the field. However, you know and I know that the hunters out there are fooling themselves. They know deep down that they don't have the ability to catch the queen of the jungle, but they like to think that they might, maybe.

No, instead our intrepid hunters will seek out the slightly (but not necessarily) easier target, the more satisfying and certainly beautiful prey, the Gazelle. The gazelle you see can be found in packs out any weekend night with their Gazelle friends. Gazelles live next door, or across the street. They are beautiful creatures and fairly obtainable: But not without a fight. So the chase is on. Which of our hunters will success in capturing his gazelle this weekend? The more they hunt and chase; and the longer they are made to chase, the more rewarded they will feel when they finally succeed. And inevitably our hunter will settle down and give up hunting. But only if his Gazelle makes him feel like he has succeeded and is a true catch. Now our hunter believes he caught his Gazelle all by himself, but maybe just maybe, the Gazelle let herself be caught. Eventually.

On the down side of our make believe Savannah is the antelope. Now our hunter wants the lioness and he tries to convince himself he could capture her if he really wanted but it is too much like hard work. He really knows that he will capture his Gazelle in all reality, but when Gazelles are scarce and hard to come by, he will go for the easy target, the antelope. Down in the bar on a Friday evening there are few Gazelles about but the antelope is grazing nearby so he pounces and achieves a result straight away. There is no chase, no thrill and hardly any sense of achievement, but it staves off his hunger for now. Tomorrow the hunt will begin again.

The antelope doesn't fair too well out of this scenario but she was never going to put up too much of a chase and he was never going to be satisfied with the outcome. So at the next opportunity your hunter will be off seeking the gazelles once again, with a sly look in the direction of the lioness in a wishful thinking kind of way. And what if the hunter does finally get his gazelle, will he be satisfied? Invariably yes. The lioness is out of reach and far too scarce. The lioness may represent perfection in our hunters' Savannah plain and he may even think about what if every now and again. However if he did catch the lioness, she would probably eat him alive! But the man as hunter will be extremely happy with his sense of achievement. The antelope will always lose out because she cannot provide our hunters with what they need and desire most - chase, thrill and an implicit satisfaction with the end result.

Where it all goes badly wrong is when the lioness, gazelle and even antelope go hunting the hunter. The hunter doesn't know what to do and is not designed to cope in such situations. The hunter will be frightened and run away. So the important point to make is that allow the hunter to feel he is doing the chasing, even if secretly, he isn't. The hunter will still feel like he deserves the feeling of success and achievement even if you led him to you.

Our urban jungles are full all such creatures. Hunters are everywhere. The unbelievably attractive and desirable lioness with her Manolo Blahnicks? Our hunter lusts after her but will rarely obtain. The beautiful Gazelle next door who puts up an excellent enough chase that the hunter will eventually settle with. The dowdy antelope is simply too obtainable to present a challenge. Now do not feel demeaned by this because of course your hunter is still the Neanderthal but if you think of our world on this level it becomes easier to get inside a man's head. Men do love to chase girls and they will always fall for the one who makes them chase the longest and hardest. It's nature in full throw. They do hanker after the catwalk beauties in our society but men are not so stupid, in reality most know they have little chances of success. Only the most confident men will even bother to chase at all.

So if you want to bring your hunter into the fold, keep him chasing you girls, long after he thinks he has caught you, still keep him chasing. You maybe the lioness or the Gazelle but he will thank you for it. After all, maybe just maybe, men are the simplest of creatures to please. Whatever you do in our dating jungle, never allow yourself to be the antelope.

Four Steps to Meeting Women at the Gym

The other day I was at the local gym when I caught sight of one of those A+ little cuties that make you forget how much weight you just got done pumping. I reflected on how the gym represents a kind of "so-near-yet-so-far" deal when it comes to meeting women, because while they may be right there prancing around covered in sexy sweat the environment never really seems appropriate for flirting around as it does in a nightclub. People are in a different frame of mind at the gym and often broadcast a variety of non-verbal "stay away" signals that only the boldest dare challenge. So this deal probably requires a more studied and subtle approach to pull off.

However, after a little experimentation and some intense pondering I think I may have identified a few nuggets hiding amidst this apparent wasteland, such as:

1) If they are locked-up in their own little i-pod universe, they are most likely out of reach as far as a DIRECT approach is concerned. I-pods and portable radios are by far the biggest obstacle to socializing in the gym. How do you break through to these chicks who are encapsulated in their own little world of sound and obviously trying to lock the rest of us out? You can try saying something clever to them, and if they see your lips moving will usually tear the headset off and ask "what?", but their annoyance at having to do so is apparent and this immediate negative posture is not easy to overcome.

About the only non-intrusive thing you CAN do is make solid eye contact wherever possible and quickly shoot them a friendly smile, without actually saying anything (since she can't hear anyway). If you get a good return look from her then you may have a play, but I usually store these up and wait to act on a similar positive read next time, not immediately. Again, I think patience is needed here because women seem easily put off by intrusions into their mental workout zone -- so you have to sort of wear these barriers down first in order to set them up for a possible move later on.

If you can pull a favorable eye contact reaction like this on future encounters, then a bit of stop-and-chat might be in order and will certainly seem less offensive since the girl's given you some cause to open a conversation with her. Women know precisely how to use eye contact to either chill-out or lure men towards them, so learn how to follow their signals. While this laid-back sort of "ticking" action might be a little too flim-flam for some of the more impatient among you, if you're looking to protect your ego and operate "without embarrassment" as much as possible then watching for these subtle signals is the best way to improve your chances of not getting blown off in public.

2) Have one loaded in the chamber and ready to go at all times. But you may have a chance to talk with her during the warm-ups or cool down after the class ends. Have you got that custom compliment all ready to go?

4) It's going to take repeated tries to break through. Because people are not really in "the mood" in this environment it's tough to create a real buzz on a first meet. It may take a few encounters to get her thinking about you in a romantic sense, if at all -- and so you have to play it cool. Pay her attention when it's appropriate to do so, but never slavishly. Certainly a fine line has to be walked here. Remember that the EYES tell the whole story when it comes to women... when your instincts tell you that you have an interested female nibbling on your line, then that's the time when you must surrender reason to those instincts and take action.

This stuff is not rocket science, it's really all about specific awareness plus some motivation.

Let's face it, gyms will probably never be the ideal environment for meeting women, but these simple ideas may give you a better chance to make a play in a poor situation now and then. There was also the nearby mall where you could drink, hang out and grab a Starbucks, and you've got a nearby 18 and up club where kids partied.

THAT MEANS – conversational topics are way easier than for grown ups, who after college are tossed in this crazy place called "the real world." As long as you're in college, the predefined norms, like rival basketball games, places to eat, places to discover, groups to join, events to attend, who the hottest guy/girl is, are basically what everyone's talking about.

2) Women in College are easier to talk to because of their hunger for a bigger social network, a diverse amount of friends and acquaintances, and again, the predefined social norms.

3) Unlike high school, where there are a lot of "cliques" and "tribes" in a smaller space, College is huge. College life ENCOURAGES joining as many cliques and tribes as you can, and most have pretty much equal social statuses. In high school, you usually just had the cool kids and the non-cool kids. In College, there are lots of things that are cool – sports, music, the arts, even debating – so it's not like your rise in status won't happen. You have to want it though.

Look, I had the best time when I was in College. I had the cool girlfriend, an acquaintance here and there greeting me on every corner of the campus, different cliques I could make a pit stop on to say what's up, and a lot of people pulling me several different directions because they wanted me to go to their events. The number one attribute I had to get this, was that I was HUNGRY and I INITIATED CONVERSATIONS.

What do you do if you think a date is going badly? You probably first have to decide if it's going badly because of something you're doing or saying or if it's something he's doing or saying.

If it's you, you can attempt to rectify things. If you're talking too much you can try to calm yourself down, breath a little, and think of a question to ask your date and then allow him or her to talk without interrupting. If you're looking like you're not interested, look interested. Stop looking past your date's face as he or she talks and make some eye contact. That can be hard if you're a little shy and this is a first date. But just do it! Your date will think you're not interested if you appear to be paying no attention to what they're saying.

Turn your cell phone off. You're just being rude if you're answering your phone or texting. Are you starting conversations about controversial topics or topics that are so boring that your date couldn't possibly be interested? Nobody except your best teacher friends want to know about what papers you graded and what your students got on them. No first date wants to hear about your menstrual cramps or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Maybe you're a left wing liberal. That's all well and good but not on the first date.

In other words, if the first date is going down the tubes and it's your fault, try to rein yourself in and turn things around. Now if the date is going badly and it's your date's fault, that's another story.

Be a little considerate. If you think he's a little shy you might want to try to draw him or him into conversation about things in which he's interested, once you figure out what those things are. If he starts talking about something that's controversial to you, and you like him well enough to overlook it, change the subject.

Sometimes, though, there isn't much you can do. Some people like to have an "emergency caller." If you're going this route, don't turn your phone off until you're sure you're happy and safe on your date. An emergency caller is someone who will call a half an hour or so after the start of your date. Maybe it's your mom, sister or best friend. When you answer the phone you can say something that let's your date know that you have to leave right away. This really isn't the nicest thing to do and should only be used when you're a little afraid of your date because he's odd or threatening or you're so annoyed that you might become odd or threatening!

If the date has just totally gone south, and there's no getting around it, just try to wait it out. When your date calls to ask for another date (should that happen – and it might), thank him or her and say that you didn't feel like you had anything in common.

More tributes have been paid to singer Amy Winehouse as her family and friends prepare to attend her private funeral, to be held in north London later.

George Michael, on Twitter, called the late star "the most soulful vocalist this country has ever seen".

In a posting on her website, meanwhile, Adele said Winehouse had "paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again".

Winehouse's body was found on Saturday at her home in Camden, north London.

According to a spokesman, the singer's funeral will be for family and close friends only.

It is understood the funeral will take place in north London.

Dionne Bromfield, Winehouse's goddaughter who was signed to the singer's record label, also paid tribute on Twitter saying: "I feel like a part of my soul has departed with the beautiful song bird Amy....Please say a prayer...She loved everyone."

Winehouse was seen out last week when she joined the 15-year-old on stage during a gig at the Roundhouse in Camden and encouraged the audience to buy her album.

An inquest into the singer's death was opened and adjourned until 26 October at London's St Pancras Coroner's Court on Monday.

During the two-minute hearing, an official read out the name, birth date and address of Winehouse, described as "a divorced lady living at Camden Square NW1".

"She was a singer-songwriter at the time of her death and was identified by her family here at St Pancras this morning," said coroner's officer Sharon Duff.

The scene of Winehouse's death, she said, "was investigated by police and determined non-suspicious."

A post-mortem examination also took place on Monday. No cause of death has yet been given.

Results of further toxicology tests could take up to four weeks.

The singer won widespread acclaim with her 2003 debut album Frank, which saw her nominated for the Mercury prize.

But it was 2006's Back to Black which brought her worldwide stardom, winning five Grammy Awards.
